Syrian rebels topple Assad rule; president flees to Russia; a new era starts in Syria | ANI Explains

In one of the most consequential turning points in the Middle East in decades, Syrian rebels declared control of Damascus on Dec 08. Syrian rebels ousted President Bashar al-Assad, ending nearly six decades of his family’s iron-fisted rule. Fall of Assad’s government wiped out a bastion from which Iran and Russia exercised influence across the Arab world. The development came hours after rebels claimed to have captured Syria’s third-largest city, Homs, in the north of the country. In a dramatic change of events, President Assad and his family have arrived in Moscow, as per Russian news agencies. Protesting against Assad family’s autocratic rule, people gathered in Syria’s Aleppo and demolished the statue of Assad. Satellite imagery captured on December 08 showed crowds toppling the statue of President Assad’s brother. Meanwhile, A Syrian rebel flag was seen hanging outside the country’s consulate in St Petersburg, Russia. However, the identity of those responsible for placing the Syrian Rebel flags is yet to be ascertained. Syrians are in a celebratory mood and rejoiced over the fall of President Bashar al-Assad worldwide. Sydney, Athens, Libiya, London and Paris, Syrians waved rebel flags, danced, and hugged each other.
