Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has successfully undergone hip replacement surgery.

The 84-year-old was hospitalised after a fall during an official visit to Luxembourg.

A spokesperson says she is on the mend but will have to withdraw from further official engagements scheduled on the trip.
