Vladimir Putin’s idea of creating a “buffer zone” on Ukrainian territory along the border with Russia is “idiotic” unless it is information cover for a full-scale offensive deep into Ukrainian territory, according to Russian war criminal Igor Girkin-Strelkov, currently serving a prison sentence for criticizing the Kremlin.

Girkin’s Telegram channel , currently run by his wife, published excerpts from his letter with his reasoning about the harmfulness of the “buffer zone” idea. The former field commander of the “DPR” group emphasizes that the creation of such a zone on the Ukrainian side of the border will not give Russia anything from a strategic point of view.

“Even if we manage to create “buffer zones” along our borders 30 or even 50 km deep, and we stop there, the war will not stop. Strikes on our rear regions will not stop, since for attack drones, and especially for missiles, a distance of 30-50 km is generally insignificant,” writes Girkin.

He emphasizes that a great many Russian troops will have to be deployed to capture and subsequently hold the border strip. At the same time, simply pushing the Ukrainian Armed Forces away from the border will not mean their defeat, which means that military actions will continue. According to Girkin, in this form Putin’s plan does not bring Russia closer to its strategic goal – the destruction of the Ukrainian state-, but only moves it away from it.

“The very idea of “buffer zones”, if they really intend to do this, is a losing option that will lead us to failure in the war. Simply put, from a strategic point of view, the idea of “buffer zones” is idiotic,” writes Girkin.

At the same time, he admits that Putin’s words about plans to create “buffer zones” in the Sumy and Kharkov regions could be just a “propaganda ploy to mask our offensive intentions.”

Recall, recently Russian President Vladimir Putin recently declared that Russia may need to create a “buffer zone” inside Ukrainian territory to protect Russian border regions from drone and artillery attacks. This statement, while framed as a defensive measure, signals a strategic shift: justification for deeper territorial expansion beyond areas Russia has claimed as its own. Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry responded to the statement later in the day, saying Putin’s remarks are further evidence that Russia is not meaningfully interested in peace.

“I remind the world that Putin’s statements about the ‘buffer zone’ come amid active efforts to achieve a full, durable ceasefire, stop the killing, and advance peace,” Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.

“These new aggressive claims clearly reject peace efforts and show that Putin has been and remains the only reason the killing continues. He needs to face more pressure to end this war.” “And as for the ‘buffer zones,’ there can be a ‘buffer zone’ on the territory of Russia, which is why Ukraine has been conducting an operation there since last year.”
