Our main stories today:
– Israel has attacked several Iranian nuclear facilities and military sites, and carried out assassinations of top military officials and nuclear scientists. An initial wave of strikes was carried out Friday morning. A second, separate attack on the city of Tabriz, in northwest Iran, was reported by local media later on Friday.
– “NATO is facing its moment of truth,” says Oana Lungescu, the Alliance’s former spokeswoman. Ukraine, defense, and the threat from Russia – these issues sit at the top of the agenda of the Forum held by GLOBSEC, a global think-tank committed to enhancing security, prosperity, and sustainability in Europe and throughout the world.
– Sweden will meet NATO’s new 5% GDP defense spending target, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. NATO’s newest member is already making major contributions across the Alliance since joining in March 2024, including through deployments to Forward Land Forces in Latvia and Finland.
– Ukrainian refugees in Europe have seen their status in the European Union extended for another year. The move was signed off on at a meeting of EU justice ministers – but while the status will be maintained for now, some ministers are calling for long-term plans to be made.
